A balloon catheter, particularly for remov ing emboli (e.g. blood clots from veins), comprises a balloon 20 which, when deflated, is in a permanently longitudinally tensioned condition. The balloon 20 is secured by bindings 22 and 23 and adhesive to parts of the flexible plastic body 10 which have projections thereon. The portion 15 is provided with longitudinally and circumferentially staggered apertures 16 to allow fluid to pass from syringe 13 via valve 12 to inflate the balloon 20. The catheter may be provided with a flexible resilient tip 31, 32 integral with the balloon to enable the catheter to pass through valve 40. |
