A lubricating composition comprises a saturated organic carboxylic ester base oil having dissolved therein a minor proportion of 4 additives (a), (b), (c) and (d) wherein (a) is a phenothiazine derivative of Formula I where Ar and Ar1 are benzene or naphthalene nuclei which may be substituted by one or more alkyl or alkoxy groups and R 1 is H, an alkyl, aralkyl or -CH 2 OR 2 group (R 2 = alkyl, aryl, alkaryl, aralkyl, cycloalkyl, alkoxyalkyl, cycloalkoxyalkyl or aryloxyalkyl); (b) is a secondary aromatic amine containing two aromatic groups directly attached to nitrogen and is other than a phenothiazine derivative; (c) is a metal dihydrocarbyl dithiophosphate; and (d) is an ashless dispersant containing at least one long saturated or unsaturated alkyl chain linked through an ester, amide or imide grouping to a group containing at least one nitrogen atom, the MW of the alkyl chain being not less than 700. Of many base oil esters mentioned the following were used in the examples: (1) and (3) Di(2-ethylhexyl)1,12-dodecanedioate. (2) Di-isodecyl ester of a commercial mixture of adipic, glutaric and succinic acids. Additives used in the examples were: (a) 3,7 dioctylphenothiazine; (b) p,p1 - dioctyldiphenylamine, 3 - mono - toctylphenyl-α-naphthylamine; (c) zinc isopropyl/1-methylheptyl dithiophosphate; (d) reaction product of polyisobutenyl succinic anhydride (derived from polyisobutylene of MW 900-1000) with a polyethylene polyamine; and the following optional additives were present: polyisobutene of MW about 2000 and a detergent prepared by reacting polyisobutene with P 2 S 3 , neutralizing with Ba(OH) 2 in the presence of an alkyl phenol and reacting the product with sulphurized overbased barium alkyl phenate and a basic barium petroleum sulphonate. Anti-wear agents such as a phosphate or phosphorothionate ester, additional esters such as complex esters or polyglycol esters, and polyoxyalkylene glycol ethers may also be present.
