PURPOSE: An apparatus is provided to reduce costs and achieve improved productivity by accurately detecting the erroneous operation of the stepping motor. CONSTITUTION: An apparatus comprises a pulse generator(22) for generating pulses for controlling a stepping motor(26) in accordance with a control signal; a motor drive unit(24) for receiving the pulses generated from the pulse generator and supplying a rated current for controlling the operation of the stepping motor; a current detector(28) for detecting the current supplied to the stepping motor from the motor drive unit; a digital current measurement unit(30) for measuring the current detected through the current detector, converting the measured current into a digital value, and outputting the converted digital current value; a controller(20) for comparing the digital current value with a preset current value, and outputting an alarm generating control signal upon occurrence of errors between the digital current value and the preset current value; and an alarm generating unit(32) for generating alarm in accordance with the alarm generating control signal output from the controller.
