1,109,993. Accumulator electrode. TEXAS INSTRUMENTS Inc. 14 Sept., 1965, No. 39227/65. Heading H1B. Accumulator electrodes comprise a sintered compressed layer of metal particles containing within its pores active solid nickel or cadmium hydroxide. They may be manufactured by (a) sintering a particulate metal layer to produce a grid of porosity greater than 95%, (b) filling the pores of this with molten nickel or cadmium nitrate and cooling, (c) dehydrating this solution, (d) treating the nitrate with an alkali metal hydroxide to convert it to hydroxide, and (e) compressing the whole body to a grid porosity less than 95%. In a particular embodiment nickel particles are sintered at 1000‹ C. and the product dipped in fused Cd(NO 3 ) 2 .4H 2 O at 70‹ C. The nitrate is then dehydrated under reduced pressure and at a temperature above its melting-point, and treated cathodically with aqueous KOH solution. The final product is compressed. In another embodiment the sintered grid is supported with a nickel wire mesh inserted before sintering. The plaque may have a terminal welded on to it and may be used in a Ni or Ni-Cd battery. |
