A concrete breaking appa- ratus (10) includes a non-circular multi-lobed impact roller (16) con- nected via an axle (18) to a wheeled frame (22) such that the roller rolls upon the ground as the frame (22) is towed by a tractor (12). Each lobe (20) of the roller includes a ridge (30) extending across the width of the roller (16) and projecting out- wardly from the impact surface of each lobe (20) along a line parallel to the axle (18) and generally cen- trally located within the dynamic impact region of the impact sur- face (26). The ridge (30) may take various configurations, including a triangular cross section, a semi- circular cross section, and a plural- ity of spaced-apart projections (42).
