[Also in Divisions B5, C3 and G2] Transparent or reflecting substrates normally subject to fogging have on at least one surface thereof a non-fogging coating of a copolymer comprising units of (I) a hydrophilic acrylate or methacrylate ester (e.g. a hydroxyalkyl or hydroxyalkoxyalkyl ester), acrylamide or methacrylamide or N-methylol derivative thereof, or diacetone acrylamide and a minor amount of (II) an ethylenically unsaturated monomer containing an amino group. The copolymer may also contain units of an amide monomer and may be crosslinked with a content of monomer containing two or more polymerisable double bonds, e.g. a diacrylate or dimethacrylate ester. The coating may optionally include an aminoplast or ammonium dichromate as a curing component. The transparent surface to be coated may be a glass surface, e.g. a window in an automobile, train or building, a mirror, a lens or a drinking glass; a plastics surface, e.g. a window or packaging film or container; or a metal reflecting surface, e.g. a chrome mirror. Specified plastics substrates are polycarbonates, cellulose esters, polyolefins, polymethyl methacrylate, styrene polymers, vinyl chloride polymers and vinylidene chloride polymers. The coatings are applied by methods such as spraying, dipping, knife coating, roll coating and brushing.</p> |
