The wear monitor for a motor vehicle brake with a friction pad (4a) and rotor (6) which assume a spacing when at rest and contact when operated. The wear monitor (2) has a sensor to determine the distance (D) between the rest position and the contact position of the pad. The monitor operates an alarm when the distance exceeds a predetermined value. Claims include a method of brake wear determination using the monitor.
