A method for preparing a reagent for treating clay drilling muds, comprising pre-treatment the water-soluble polymer with said modifier, neutralization of the reaction mixture with sodium hydroxide and mixing with the sulfate of polyvalent metal and bichromate, characterized in that the water-soluble polymer is treated with a 40% formalin solution and heating in the presence of a catalyst in an acid medium, neutralization of the reaction mixture is carried out to pH 8.0-9.0 and after mixing said components the polyol is added. 3. The method according to claim 2, characterized in that the water-soluble polymer is treated with the 40% formalin solution at an initial temperature of 80-90 degree C. 4. The method according to claim 1, characterized in that the water-soluble polymer is treated in the presence of a BF3 etherate catalyst.
