Disclosed is a device for gluing together two webs (3, 4) of packaging material used for producing liquid-tight packages, at least one face of each web (3, 4) being coated with a liquid-tight, heat-activated adhesive layer. Said device comprises means (5, 21, 27) for clamping the webs (3, 4) of material, a cutting mechanism (11) for making a diagonal cut that runs approximately perpendicular to the web (3, 4) of material, and a welding unit (30) applying heat and pressure for gluing together the webs (3, 4) of material along an adhesive strip. In order to provide the effective face of the web of material with an effective adhesive spot which is of sufficient quality and ensures improved and more reliable liquid tightness when an empty roll is replaced by a new, full roll, the welding unit (30) is provided with a carriage which is movable along a transverse rail (28) that runs approximately perpendicular to the direction of conveyance (9) of the web (3, 4) of material and on which a heater (33) and a pressing roller that is arranged behind said heater (33) in the moving direction are disposed.
