An elevator does not require increase in lifting/lowering passage dimensions even when the capacity of a hoist machine is increased. In the elevator, the position at which a cage is supported by a hoisting rope is freely selectable. Because a hoist machine (10) of the elevator is provided with its rotation shaft extending in the vertical direction, increase in lifting/lowering passage dimensions is not required even when an axial dimension of the hoist machine (10) becomes large when the capacity of the hoist machine (10) is increased. Because a drive shaft (10a) of the hoist machine (10) extends vertically, the area, seen in a cross-sectional view of the lifting/lowering passage, occupied by the hoist machine is considerably reduced. The degree of positional freedom in installing the hoist machine (10) is increased and the position at which a cage (3) is supported by a rope (14) can be freely selected.
