Disclosed are methods for treating or preventing cataract in a subject by administering to the subject an inhibitor of a fiber cell globulization aminopeptidase or by otherwise inhibiting fiber cell globulization aminopeptidase activity. Methods for inhibiting globulization of fiber cells and for inhibiting opacification of an ocular lens are also disclosed, as are methods for screening test compounds for their usefulness in inhibiting globulization of fiber cells, for their usefulness in inhibiting opacification of an ocular lens, and for their usefulness in treating or preventing cataract. An isolated fiber cell globulization aminopeptidase is also described, as are methods for making such isolated fiber cell globulization aminopeptidases, and antibodies specific for such isolated fiber cell globulization aminopeptidases. |
