A grinding or polishing apparatus comprises either an abrasive belt 44 conducted over a contact wheel 10 and tensionable by means of at least one tensioning roller 19, or a polishing wheel, the contact wheel or polishing wheel being arranged on a limitedly movable holder 9 mounted on a carrier part 1, the pressure application force of the contact or polishing wheel at the machining position being kept at least approximately constant with different height positions of the wheel in relation to a workpiece support surface. When the apparatus includes the abrasive belt, the holder 9 carries the contact wheel 10 at one end and is mounted on a pivot 38 on the carrier part 1, the lever having an extension 11 connected to one end of a spring 14, the other end of which is secured to the carrier part. A bracket 34 is connected to the lever 9 and to an air cylinder 36 which, with the spring, acts to press the contact wheel against the abrasive belt. The belt is entrained about a pulley 7 on the pivot 38, a pulley 6 driven by an electric motor, and the tensioning roller 19. The latter is mounted on one arm 18 of a two-armed lever 17, the other 20 of which is connected by a spring 23 secured to a sleeve 24 adjustably positioned on an arm 15 carrying the part 1. A rod 25 articulated to the sleeve 24 and having notches engageable by a bolt 27 at the end of a lever 28 permits adjustment of the tension in the spring. A rod 30 between the arm 18 and lever 28 effects raising and lowering of the tensioning roller 19 upon movement of the lever to tension the abrasive belt or permit its removal from the apparatus. The arrangement of the levers 9, 17 and springs 14, 23 is such that the contact wheel 10 applies a constant force to the abrasive belt during vertical movement over a workpiece and the tension in the belt remains constant. The cylinder 36 can be actuated to supplement the springs. The spring 14 may be connected to the extension 11 on the other side of the centre line of the lever 9. When the apparatus is used with a polishing wheel, the contact wheel is replaced by a polishing wheel 50, Fig. 7, and the pulley 7 is replaced by a pulley which is driven by a motor and connected by bolts to the polishing wheel. The workpieces may be carried by a conveyer belt. |
