<p>To produce optimum ingot structure and uniformity the distance between the growing ingot top and the consumable electrode tip in the slag bath are controlled by (a) means of moving electrode relative to mould in slag bath, (b) applying potential between them. (c) comparing actual with predicated ingot growth and (d) signalling corrective action to maintain ingot-electrode distance. (c) may be achieved by (1) load cell to measure decreasing electrode or (2) increasing ingot weight, (3) depth probe, (4) level detectors, e.g. radiation, on outside of mould, (5) electrical inter-electrode measurements. (d) is achieved by electrical controller converting differential signal into controlling signal to regulate speed of electrode withdrawal or regulate voltage to control rate of electrode comsumption.</p> |
