An open-ended spinning rotor has a support disc bearing with a blind hole (29) for a non-ferromagnetic core. The core holds a permanent cylindrical magnet for non-contact speed measurement. The permanent magnet (23) is secured in the blind hole esp. by a non-ferromagnetic fixture. The non-ferromagnetc fixture is a close-fitting cylindrical cap in contact with both the blind hole sidewalls and magnet (23). The magnet locates within a detent on the cap inner face.
