To prepare and condition annual vegetable matter, and especially straw, it is in water and subjected to ultrasonic waves at a frequency of up to 300 kHz and preferably 20-60 kHz in a continuous process, while the straw material travels in water through a pipe reactor (4) with an ultrasonic generator (5). The straw is subjected to ultrasonic waves for 0.1 seconds to 10 minutes, and preferably 0.5-10.0 seconds. It can be in a batch process with pressures up to 15 bar. The water is heated to 100[deg]C through a steam supply (7) and contains a dosed (2) odor-suppressing additive. The straw is ground by a hammer mill (1) and passed to a buffer store (3) before entering the reactor.
