A blade holder for a wood chipping machine has two clamping plates, one (4) fixed to the drum and one (2) loose, and held together by a screw set through a slotted hole in the blade. The rear of the mounting has a cross support (5) threaded by adjusting screws (13) to set the cutting depth of the blade. The cross support includes shear points which release the blade holder to swing back if struck by a large stone or hard object, e.g. metal pieces. This prevents undue damage to the blade holder and blade, enabling a simple repair or replacement. The shear points can be shear screws (8) or welded/brazed connections.
