The vehicle has an internal combustion engine (1) driving a generator (4) and driving a pair of wheels (16) via a clutch (15) and gearbox (3) with a speed sensor (14). There is a speed sensor (13) on the engine output shaft (2). The electrical system incorporates a battery (5), and also a resistor (10) in the engine oil circuit (18) to provide a load for rapid deceleration of the engine during upward gearchanges, and relay switches (7,11) connected to a control switch (6). The control switch has inputs from sensors (12) and is connected to a further switch (19).
