A stone mason's mallet has a round head and is made from domestic hardwoods rather than environmentally sensitive imported hardwoods. Wedges of wood are assembled and glued into discs and the discs are stacked with the radial joins offset, and glued together. This ensures that the mallet strikes the chisels with end grain no matter which orientation the mallet is held at. The feel of the mallet remains the same in any orientation. All the discs, save the outer discs, are drilled and loaded with ballast, i.e. a material denser than the wood. The central discs can be stabilised by metal pegs parallel to the axis of the mallet head.
