The present invention discloses a method for processing SDH pointer, the method comprises the steps of : processing a number of pointer processing path of STM-64 signal, each path including a time division converting unit, a pointer interpreting unit, and at least one FIFO retiming and pointer regenerating unit, each group of STM-4 data stream being inputted to the time division converting unit of respective path, and converted four-way STM-1 data stream; transmitting said four-way STM-1 data stream timesharingly to the pointer interpreting unit, and extracting the pointer value, then getting the state information from pointer interpreting state machine based on the pointer value , accumulating interpreted pointer value state information and then transmitting it timesharingly to respective FIFO unit which perform the regeneration of each STM-1 data stream and regeneration of new pointer. The present invention also discloses a circuit for processing SDH pointer. The method and circuit is novel, and achieves the multiplexing of pointer interpreting unit and FIFO retiming and pointer interpreting unit, thus greatly simplifying the circuit and saving chip resource and accordingly improving the pointer processing efficiency of STM-4 data stream.
