The protective device in the front region of a vehicle for the protection of especially pedestrians and animals has an axially symmetrical roller (8) which during the impact has a upwards directed rotational movement around an axis which is perpendicular to the direction of travel and parallel to the ground, as a result of which the person or animal (4) is first seized tangentially at a contact point and then lifted from the ground (9). The roller has a shock-absorbing construction.
