Apparatus for forming bottom closures on rectangular section tubular cartons having thermoplastic coated sealing flap portions, comprises means to preheat the selected areas of the sealing surfaces and consisting of a central head which enters the tube end to blow hot air on these areas through a vertical slit at each corner and transverse slits extending from the corner junctions, and side heaters which blow hot air on to outer surfaces of closure flap portions. Collapsed tubular cartons, coated on both sides with thermoplastic adhesive, are each fed from a magazine and opened out between pins 142, Fig. 1, on one of a series of holders 120 on a continuously rotating turret 103. Beneath the turret and rotating with it, is a plate 166 carrying beneath each holder the central head 380 and side heaters 396, Figs. 6, 12. Beneath the plate 166 is a stationary plenum chamber 300, spring urged against the underside of the plate to form a seal and blowing hot air through apertures 366, 368, Fig. 6, into the members 380, 396. The air is supplied to the two compartments 332, 334 of the chamber by gas burning equipment 342, 344, 350. Each head 380 has upstanding corner portions, Figs. 12, 15, with a vertical slot 388 at each corner and horizontal slots 390. The heaters 396 have each patterns of apertures corresponding to the triangular carton flaps 56, 63, 64, Fig. 4, when the respective holder descends to place the closure portion of the carton over the head 380. Slits 408, (412), Fig. 18 (not shown), in two opposed walls of the head cause hot air to be blown directly on to a flap portion 62, which is outside in the finished closure, and indirectly via a baffle 404, Fig. 10, on to the back of a flap 61 which tucks inside. A roller 414 on one of the side heaters squares up the carton as it descends over the head 380. After heating, each holder 120 rises to pull the carton over a mandrel 105 and the bottom closure is formed by means 106, not detailed. |
