In the event of the vehicle being hit from behind, a control unit connected to collision sensors instructs a high speed electric motor for the seat belt winding roll to wind in the belt so that the seats occupant is held tightly in the seat during the initial collision. As the backrest later starts to swing forwards towards the occupants head, the roll is instructed to rotate in the opposite direction in order to pay out the seat belt.
