A recording medium loading apparatus having a carrier unit 70 for transferring the disc 11, 12 or disc cartridge 13 between an eject position and a loaded position by moving within a holder 40. When the carrier unit 70 transfers the disc cartridge 13, the disc cartridge 13 is held by a cartridge lever 77. The cartridge lever 77 is capable of moving between a first position protruding from the carrier unit 70 in an arrow Y2 direction to hold the disc cartridge 13 and at a second position estranging from the first position in an arrow Y1 direction. The recording medium loading apparatus is capable of loading various types of disc-shaped recording medium and reduces the installation space.
