[Also in Division G3] A device for the automatic adjustment of the gap between the anode and cathode of an electrolytic cell having a mercury cathode 2 comprises a number of frames 7 each supporting one or more anodes 4 and each constrained so as to move up or down a pair of threaded supports 12, 13; a nut 14 or 15 screwed on each threaded support the frame 7 resting on these nuts; means such as sprockets 17, 18 and a chain 9 for rotating together each pair of nuts 14, 15 so that each nut moves up or down the support by the same amount; and drive means including a speed reducer 21 coupled to a sprocket 16 on the nut 14 by a chain 25 for controlling this rotation in dependence upon the voltage differential between the anode or anodes supported by that frame and the cathode, the drive means being brought into operation when the voltage differential exceeds the limits of a preselected range. As shown the supports 12, 13 are fixed to the cell casing and the nuts move on the supports, but in a modification the nuts are fixed on the supports which are rotatable within threaded bushes fixed to the cell walls. The voltage sensing arrangement producing the control signal for the drive means may include photo-sensitive resistors cooperating with lamps associated with the movement of a galvanometer responsive to the sensed voltage, and a suitable circuit is described with reference to Fig. 3 (not shown); circuits employing transistor relays and magnetic or electro-pneumatic devices may also be used. Limit switches may be provided on the drive means, together with means for effecting manual control if necessary.
