1,184,035. Rodent-resistant fibrous materials. I. LICHTENSTEIN, R. M. WEISBERG, F. E. STILLMAN, A. GOLDSTEIN and J. WALLERSTEIN [trading as STRUCTURAL PAPER CO]. 20 Feb., 1968, No. 8302/68. Heading A5E. [Also in Division D1]. Compositions comprising molten ammonium or potassium alum and water are used to impregnate fibrous materials to render them rodent-resistant, the strengthened materials, when made and cooled, having less than 5% of their original surface area hidden by visible crystalline impregnating material, the weight of the impregnant being at least 50% and preferably 100-220% of the weight of the fibrous material before impregnation. A sodium ion source and/or a wetting agent may be used. The fibrous materials may be impregnated by immersion in a bath or by hot spray application and may then have a waterproof coating applied.
