In a thermal regenerator in which a fluidpermeable heat transfer mass moves continuously through gas streams at different temperatures such that each portion of the mass is contracted successively by the gases, the mass comprises a fine-mesh three-dimensional structure consisting of interconnected fibres the size and spacing of which is such as to permit a substantially unobstructed flow of the gases through the mass whilst at least some of the fibres act as microturbulence generators providing vortices in the flow and being positioned in relation to fibres upstream of them, in the disturbance caused by the micro-turbulence. The votices are small being generally limited to a size equivalent to twice the fibre diameter. The mass may consist of individual fibres bonded together at their points of contact; or it may consist of a polyurethane foam from which the cell membranes have been removed, e.g. as described in U.S. Specification 3,171,820. In an apparatus having a rotating mass and which is used, e.g. to transfer heat between discharged waste air and incoming fresh air, the mass may function as a fan and also as a course filter for the air streams. By spraying water into one of the air streams, evaporative cooling of the other stream is faciliated particularly when the cooling takes place in stages. |
