The manipulation of a composition of a rare earth halide uses an opaque material including at least 20% by wt of carbon, in particular for crystal growth from the composition.. The composition comes into contact with this material in the molten state at a temperature greater than 500 degrees C. The crystals are generally of the formula AeLnfX(3f+e), where (a) Ln represents one or several rare earth(s); (b) X represents one or several halogen atom(s) selected from Cl, Br or I; (c) A represents one or several alkaline(s) such as K, Li, Na, Rb or Cs; (d) e and f represent values such that e, capable of being null, is not greater than 2f and f is not less than 1. |
