This invention relates to a battery cell housing for valve-regulated, lead-acid batteries. The housing includes a base (102), vertical side walls (104) attached to the base, and a top wall (108), defining a single, shelfless battery compartment (110). A compression member (175) is positioned in the battery compartment beneath the top wall (108) for movement between the side walls so as to compress a stack of separately cased battery cells (115) stacked in a horizontal position in the battery compartment (110). Internally threaded members are attached to the top wall, each in alignment with an associated opening in the top wall. A compression bolt (170) extends through each top wall opening and contacts the compression member (175) while threadedly engaging the associated internally threaded member.
