A sound damping floor (3) covering (1), esp for vehicle floors, comprises a flexible intermediate layer (11) between the floor and the surface (7), along with at least one spacer. The spacer (13) allows relative movement between the surface and the floor when the covering is loaded. The length of the spacer is less than the thickness of the intermediate layer in the non loaded condition. The intermediate layer consists of a plastic foam. The spacer can be moved between two parts of the intermediate layer.
