A process for reducing NOX concentrations in waste gas streams. More particularly, the present invention relates to contacting a NOX-containing waste gas stream with an effective amount of chlorine dioxide under conditions such that at least a fraction of the oxidizable NOX species present in the waste gas stream is oxidized to higher nitrogen oxides.
