Thick metal plates can be cut without any loss of oxygen cutting efficiency which may be caused by mixing with the ambient air, if a protective liquid jet is introduced as a shield into the gap between the two pieces of metal following the cutting jet. When contact between the molten oxides and a non-flammable liquid would cause difficulties, an inflammable liquid such as kerosine or diesel fuel can be used. A preheating flame is used during the start of a cut but this can be throttled down or completely shut off later. |
