In a WDM optical communication network where a transmitter, a photonic switch (optical crossconnect or an optical router), and a receiver are connected, switching information is sent instead from the transmitter to the photonic switch after the transmission of a main signal of the wavelength to be switched out of the WDM optical signals is suspended. Upon receiving the switching information, the photonic switch performs switching, resumes the transmission of the main signal after the switching, and transfers the main signal along the selected route. The modulation rate of the switching information is sufficiently lower than that of the main signals of the other wavelengths. The receiver for receiving the switching information is so constructed as to respond only to the low modulation rate. Even if the whole WDM optical signals including the main signals of the other wavelengths is received, only the switching information can be extracted.
|
