The present invention relates to an apparatus for use in the heat treatment of a product packed in a package, with a view to extending its shelf life. The apparatus comprises a number of elongate, substantiallymutually parallel rails extending along a longitudinal direction and disposed to groupwise or pairwise define open-walled channels in which the packages may be slidingly inserted along said longitudinal direction. In the channels, movement of packages in each respective channel in any optional transverse direction transversely of the longitudinal direction is limited by said rails. The present invention further relates to a method of heat treatment of a product packed in a package, with a view to extending its shelf life.
