PURPOSE: A method for preparing carboxymethylcellulose is provided, to reduce the environmental pollution and the manufacturing cost by using the waste milk pack. CONSTITUTION: The method comprises the steps of adding the washed milk pack into a pulper and adding a NaOH aqueous solution to prepare alkali cellulose; reacting the alkali cellulose with sodium chloroacetate to prepare sodium carboxymethylcellulose; and purifying the sodium carboxymethylcellulose. Preferably the concentration of the NaOH aqueous solution is 10-30 %. Preferably the purification is performed by dissolving sodium carboxymethylcellulose in water to prepare sticky one, filtering it to remove the unseparated polyethylene and purifying it by precipitation; or dissolving sodium carboxymethylcellulose in water to prepare sticky one, preparing a thin film from the sticky one, drying it and pulverizing the dried one to obtain the powdered one.
