PURPOSE: An apparatus and a method for providing a hot swap function in a router system having a mid-plane structure are provided to prevent the signal distortion of a system when a line board having a physical interface is inserted and deleted. CONSTITUTION: The first bus switch(410) turns on/off connection between a CPU(403) and a mid-plane(409). The second bus switch(407) turns on/off connection between a packet processor(402) and the mid-plane(409). A bus switch controller(405) separately controls the operations of the first bus switch(410) and the second bus switch(407) according as a line board is installed or detected. A hot swap controller(406) controls a hot swap function, and supplies a power normal signal to the bus switch controller(405) when receiving a power and performing a normal operation.
