1,228,290. Reducing redundancy in video signals. WESTERN ELECTRIC CO. Inc. 22 Dec., 1969 [23 Dec., 1968], No. 62288/69. Heading H4F. In apparatus for reducing video signal redundancy including a frame memory 19 for storing an entire frame of video samples, a subtractor circuit 18 for determining the difference between a new video sample from camera 10 and a corresponding sample from a previous frame stored in the memory 19, and a control logic 2 for determining whether this difference exceeds a threshold level, the threshold level is arranged to be greater at high luminance levels than at low luminance levels. When, and only when, the difference exceeds the threshold level, the new video sample is fed into the frame memory 19 via a controlled switch circuit 29 to replace the original sample, and is also written into a buffer memory 28 for storage prior to subsequent synchronized read-out via transmitting apparatus 31. A forward-backward counter 27 determines the number of samples stored in the memory 28 and causes the threshold difference level to increase as the number of stored samples increases, as a protection against overflow of the buffer memory 28. The arrangement whereby the threshold difference level is greater at higher luminance levels includes a luminance weighting circuit 22 providing a signal Y which increases monotonically step-wise as the luminance level increases, and this signal is subtracted from the original difference signal X in a subtractor circuit 21. A negative overload 23 passes signals corresponding to positive values of X - Y unchanged to the control logic 25, but when Y> X the overload 23 provides an output corresponding to zero. An analogue-to-digital converter 12 enables the entire redundancy reduction procedure to be carried out in digital form. |
