[Also in Division G3] A system for synchronizing the speed and phase of operation of master and slave engines comprises pulse generators 108, 114 driven by the engines 100, 112 and delivering signals to a pure fluid detector 104 the output from which is proportional to the speed error. This error signal is fed to parallel resonant cavities 118, 120 tuned to frequencies above and below a small frequency difference which exists between the two speed signals when the slave engine is on-speed. From the cavities the signals pass through half-wave rectifiers 122-128 to a lag-lead circuit 131 comprising serially arranged proportional amplifiers 133, 134 and summing amplifier 136. After further amplification at 152 the signals are fed to summing amplifier 154 which also receives signals representative of any phase error in the speed signals. The phase is detected by amplifier 106 which receives signals from pulse generators 110, 116 and discharges through capacitors 72, 74 to a lead-lag circuit comprising summing amplifier 142 and proportional amplifiers 144, 146. The output from amplifier 154 controls the slave engine speed via spool 158, ram 162 and throttle 160. In a modification, the speed error detector is omitted since the output of the phase error detector will provide simultaneous control of speed and phase. The system is applicable to turbojet installations and to rotary and reciprocating engines and compressors. The speed of the slave engine may be controlled by controlling the flow of fuel to the engine or the pitch of a propeller.</p>
