The method involves internal nodes providing data packets with load-dependent markers. Exit nodes count data packets and markers from the communications network separately according to paths and derive values for the load along each path from them. The values derived by all exit nodes are fed into an equation system describing the communications network with internal and access nodes. The solution gives the relative load of the network elements.
