A heat treatment oven has a steel slab transport roller on a supporting pipe (1) axially separated from a series of support rings (2) radially recessed from a heat insulation monolithic lining material (4b) mantle (4). The support tube is cooled by a passage (6a) through the pipe. The pipe and mantle are separated in operation by an annular passage (7) with a flowing gaseous coolant. The passage has a series of radial cooling gas outlets (6b). The mantle is permeable for the coolant gas. The passage feeds coolant gas and forms an annular passage in conjunction with the pipe. Coolant enters the annular passage (7) via the radial outlets.
