<p>Polyethylene of unsaturation rate above 0.1% is reacted with at least one vinyl or acrylic monomer containing over 0.5 weight % benzoyl peroxide or tertiary butyl perbenzoate catalyst, at a temp. sufficiently high to decompose the peroxide catalyst with formation of free radicals, and polymerise the monomer(s) while grafting them on to the polyethylene. The monomer/catalyst mixture is advantageously added as a coating to the polyethylene which is present as pearls or powder. Graft copolymers obtained have improved rigidity, impact-resistance and tensile strength.</p> |
