The invention comprises prefabricated door and window units for fitting into apertures in buildings and including window panels (5). The windows comprise at least two separate panels each made of fire retarding transparent material with separate fire retarding properties, thereby providing a total fire retarding protection as the sum of the separate panels. Various transparent materials can be fitted including glass. The outer window panels can be set flush with the two sides of the unit using metal spacers around the internal edges of the window panels. The windows are secured using suitable sealing compounds.
