It is intended to provide a novel pigment protein originating in Cnidopus japonicus. Namely, a pigment protein originating in Cnidopus japonicus which has the following characteristics is provided: (1) having a maximum absorpti on wavelength of 559 nm and having a maximum fluorescence wavelength of 578 nm: (2) having a molar absorption coefficient at 559 nm of 61150; (3) having a quantum yield less than 0.01; and (4) the pH sensitivity of the absorption properties being stable at pH 4 to 10.
