The invention is concerned with handover between a GSM type network and a UMTS type network. The underlying concept here is making use of a RNC of the UMTS to control handover so that handover is simplified. Here, the method of switching from a GSM type network to a UMTS network involves switching directly from a mode in which user equipment is in communication with a GSM type base station to a UMTS diversity mode. Hence the user equipment is in communication with a plurality of UMTS access nodes.
