The article (1) contains a liquid-receiving layer (5) obtained by pleating and heating a carded web of elastic fibres and heat-meltable binder fibres. An absorbent article (1) comprises a liquid-permeable surface material (2), a liquid-tight bottom layer (3), an absorbent body (4) between these permeable and liquid-tight layers, and a liquid-receiving layer between the surface material and absorbent body. The liquid-receiving layer is a carded fibrous web comprising a mixture of elastic fibres and heat-meltable binder fibres, the latter having a lower melting point than the elastic fibres. The web is pleated and a high proportion of the fibres in the web come to be oriented in the z-direction, substantially at right angles to the length and cross-direction of the web. Binding of the web is brought about by blowing hot air onto it at a temperature greater than the binder fibre melting point, but less than the elastic fibre melting point. The walls of the pleats are bonded together to stabilize the pleated structure. |
