PURPOSE: A subscriber terminal apparatus and a method for operating the same are provided to allow users to watch programs even in case of breakdown of scrambler or system maintenance by automatically selecting the path of the image signal of the scrambled channel and general channel. CONSTITUTION: A subscriber terminal apparatus comprises an image processing unit(180) for detecting an image signal from a demodulated signal, de-scrambling the image signal in accordance with a control signal, outputting the de-scrambled signal to a first output terminal, converting a specific signal into a digital signal, and outputting the digital signal to a second output terminal; a reference signal removing unit(130) for receiving the image signal from the first output terminal of the image processing unit, and removing a reference signal; an image signal matching unit(140) including a buffer and an amplifier; an image processing control unit for receiving signal from the second output terminal of the image processing unit, providing a control signal for de-scrambling to the image processing unit, and outputting parts of the signals input from other output terminals; a transmission path control unit for receiving signals output from the image processing control unit, judging a scrambling, and generating a control signal for controlling a transmission path; and a transmission path converting unit for receiving signals from the reference signal removing unit and the image signal matching unit, and selectively outputting signals in accordance with the control signal output from the transmission path control unit.
