Production of plastic parts with a colored metallic finish comprises coating a plastic part with aluminum, anodizing the product to create pores in the aluminum, immersing the product in a dye solution, and sealing the pores. Production of plastic parts with a colored metallic finish comprises chemically treating a plastic part to create micropores, depositing a catalyst in the micropores, activating the catalyst in a bath of accelerator or reducing agent, depositing copper or nickel on the part, applying aluminum by nonaqueous electroplating, mechanically, chemically or electrochemically treating the aluminum to produce a matt or bright finish, anodizing the product to create pores in the aluminum, immersing the product in a dye solution, and sealing the pores. An Independent claim is also included for a plastic part with a colored matt or bright metallic finish produced as above.
