The protection device for a purlin (1) or a rafter (2) is in the shape of a covering sheath (3) for protecting the visible parts (1A,2A) of the component against bad weather. The sheath has a U-shaped profile open at one end (3A) and closed at its other end and is slid over the exposed part of the component. An Independent claim is included for a method of installing the protection device.
