[Also in Division D1] A composition used in the treatment of cellulosic fabrics comprises an aqueous solution of a precondensate of a thermosetting and/or reactive resin, e.g. dimethylol dihydroxy ethylene urea, and as catalyst a mono- or polyhydroxy monocarboxylic acid having at least 5 carbon atoms and at least one hydroxy group in the γ- or 8-position and forming a non-volatile lactone upon removal of water, a dicarboxylic acid having at least 5 carbon atoms which forms an inner anhydride upon removal of water or an α-hydroxy monocarboxylic acid having at least 5 carbon atoms which forms a non-volatile lactide upon removal of water. The catalyst may be phthalic, gluconic, glucuronic or α- hydroxy glutaric acid, an α-keto-γ or 8-hydroxy carboxylic acid, a uronic acid or a dicarboxylic acid derived from a sugar. The aqueous solution may also contain a polyethylene plasticizer emulsion and octadecylethylene urea, as in the example, in which the resin is dimethylol dihydroxy ethyleneurea and the catalyst glucuronic acid. |
