A cast bar emerging from a continuous casting mould (1) is cooled in a cooling zone (2) arranged after the mould and then, still having a liquid core, passed to an uncooled equalization zone (4) where heat emission from the molten core causes the surface temperature of the bar to rise above that prevailing upon entrance of the bar into the equalization zone.
