<p>The vertical cylindrical vessel (2) has an internal or external vertical downcomer (3) at the side. Its upper and lower openings (4, 5) permit water recirculation. An agitator (6) is located high in the downcomer. An upper central riser (8) in the vessel, discharges over a flow surface (9), and defines a peripheral channel (13) discharging into the top of the downcomer. A flow straightener (15) is located in the main vessel below the peripheral channel. The vessel height to diameter ratio is 2 or more. Its base is conical. The top is spherical, ovoid or polygonal.
